As the name suggests, we prepared plant-based chili for those experiencing food insecurity and homelessness, often using TVP as a ground beef substitute. I heard countless times that people couldn’t tell the difference—and the vast majority of these people were not plant-based eaters.

What is TVP?

Textured vegetable protein (TVP) is a highly nutritious soy product made from defatted soy flour that has been cooked under pressure and then dried. It is naturally gluten-free, low in fat and calories, and rich in complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids needed by the human body. One serving provides 13 grams of protein and 18% of your daily value of fiber. TVP is also a good source of dietary fiber, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus.
