Introduction

As a plant-based dietitian, I know firsthand how important the right kitchen tools can be in making plant-based cooking easy, enjoyable, and delicious. While these tools can make your cooking experience more convenient and versatile, it’s important to note that you can absolutely cook amazing plant-based meals without them. If you can’t get these tools for any reason—whether it’s financial, access, or space—there’s no shame in that. The essence of plant-based cooking is about making the best use of what you have. With that said, here are some helpful kitchen tools that can enhance your plant-based cooking experience.

1. Tofu Press

Why This Made the List: Tofu can sometimes be seen as bland or mushy, but that’s often due to improper preparation. A tofu press removes excess water from tofu, allowing it to better absorb marinades and achieve a firmer texture. This is crucial for making delicious and versatile tofu dishes, from stir-fries to grilled tofu steaks.

Ideas for Use:

  • Marinated Tofu: Press your tofu, then marinate it in a mixture of soy sauce, garlic, and ginger before baking or grilling.
  • Crispy Tofu: Use the tofu press to get your tofu extra firm, then coat it in cornstarch and air fry or pan-fry for a crispy texture.
  • Tofu Scramble: Press tofu to remove excess water, then crumble it and sauté with vegetables and spices for a hearty breakfast.
  • Tofu Steaks: Press and slice tofu into thick steaks, marinate, and grill or bake for a delicious plant-based protein.

2. Non-Stick Pans

Why This Made the List: I love my non-stick pots and pans set. It makes clean-up a breeze and drastically reduces the amount of oil needed to cook (if needed at all). A high-quality non-stick pan is perfect for sautéing vegetables and making plant-based meals. It’s easy to clean and reduces the need for added fats in cooking.

Ideas for Use:

  • Sautéed Veggies: Use a non-stick pan to quickly sauté vegetables with just a splash of vegetable broth or a tiny bit of oil.
  • Plant-Based Omelets: Make a chickpea flour or tofu-based omelet without worrying about it sticking to the pan.
  • Pancakes and Crepes: Cook delicious plant-based pancakes or crepes without sticking or burning.
  • Stir-Fries: Create quick and easy vegetable stir-fries with minimal oil and easy cleanup.

3. Air Fryer

Why This Made the List: An air fryer uses hot air to cook food with little to no oil, ideal for making crispy vegetables, tofu, and plant-based snacks. It’s a great cooking method that preserves the nutrients in vegetables while providing a satisfying texture. And here’s a bonus tip: if you have a multi-functional air fryer like the one I have and recommend, you can do even more!

Ideas for Use:

  • Crispy Chickpeas: Toss chickpeas in your favorite spices and air fry for a crunchy, protein-packed snack.
  • Air-Fried Veggies: Create a variety of crispy vegetables like Brussels sprouts, sweet potato fries, or cauliflower bites.
  • Tofu Nuggets: Coat tofu pieces in breadcrumbs and air fry for a delicious alternative to traditional nuggets.
  • Baked Falafel: Make homemade falafel that’s crispy on the outside and tender on the inside without deep-frying.
